In other words, when we feel that our peace of mind is threatened, when we experience something new or challenging, or when we feel that we have little to no control over a situation and its potential outcome, we feel stress.

Each individual is different, and every person has his or her own ways of dealing with stress. This variation in one’s ability to deal with stress depends on a variety of factors, such as genetics, events in one’s early life, personality traits and even our surroundings as well as social and economic conditions.

When a person experiences stress, the human body produces and releases stress hormones. These hormones trigger a ‘fight or flight’ response mechanism. This in turn activates the immune system and helps people to respond instantly to a challenging or threatening situation.

However, when there is an excessive amount of stress, there are negative effects on the human body, as well as the human mind. When that happens, people tend to remain in a permanent state of ‘fight or flight’. This, in turn, causes people to feel overwhelmed and as a result, they are unable to cope with the stress. In the long term, this kind of situation negatively affects both one’s physical as well as mental health.
